Can sawdust and textile offcuts become part of a luminaire?

At Pilen, Derome’s innovation project in Varberg, leftover materials became the starting point for a bespoke lighting solution. Through collaboration across different areas of expertise, an innovative material concept was transformed into a finished luminaire, designed for a specific setting.

A place to explore new ideas
Pilen is Derome’s innovation project in Varberg, where four linked houses provide a setting for exploring new approaches to living, construction and interior design. Material development, reuse and resource efficiency are among the key areas of focus.

Pur Interiör & Koncept was responsible for the interior concept and recognised an opportunity to give leftover materials a new purpose. Together with The Loop Factory, they explored how sawdust from Derome’s operations and textile offcuts from Svensson in Kinna could be combined to create a new fibre-based material.

But developing a new material is one thing. Turning it into a functional luminaire is another. How could the concep tbecome a practical lighting solution?

From materialconcept to finished lighting
Belid joined the project when the material concept was ready to be developed into a lighting solution. Drawing on our expertise in lighting, engineering and manufacturing, we helped transform the idea into a solution that was both technically sound and practical to produce.

The result was a series of luminaires that gave the leftover materials a new purpose while contributing to the character of the interiors. The project demonstrate show material knowledge, design and technical expertise can come together to turn an idea into eality.

When the right solution isn't in the catalogue
Pilen shows how a lighting solution can begin somewhere entirely different from a product catalogue.

For architects and interior designers, the starting point might be a material, a sketch or a vision for how light shouldi nteract with the architecture.

With our own manufacturing facilities in Varberg, where we have developed and produced lighting since 1969, we have the experience and expertise to bring these ideas to life.

Through Belid Custom Lighting, we can adapt existing luminaires or develop entirely new solutions tailored to the specific requirements of a project. Materials, proportions, colours, functionality and technical details can all become part of the development process.

For us, bespoke lighting isn't about making changes for the sake of change. It's about finding the right solution for each space, while staying true to the original design intent.

Do you have a material, a sketch or an idea you'd like to explore?

We welcome the opportunity to get involved early in the process and explore what's possible together.
