L’ARBRE À LUNE

Site-specific public art by Färg & Blanche

Design studio Färg & Blanche created L’Arbre à Lune - Moon Trees, commissioned by Fastighets AB Förvaltaren for two courtyards in the Östern district of Sundbyberg, with AM Public as art consultant. Belid Custom Lighting contributed as manufacturer and technical partner in the development and realisation of the artwork’s lighting solution.

The five-metre-high light sculptures in metal are inspired by Nordic light and the contrast between the foliage of summer and the bare silhouettes of winter. Through light, form and scale, the artwork creates a landscape of its own, in dialogue with the surrounding architecture and the changing seasons.

“Moon Trees takes its starting point in Nordic light and the way trees change through the seasons. We wanted to bring together the organic and the sculptural throughl ight, creating some thing that both transforms the place and becomes part of it.” says Fredrik Färg, designer at Färg & Blanche.

Technical development and construction
Belid’s role was to translate Färg & Blanche’s design into a technically feasible and manufactur able solution, adapted to the Nordic climate, stringent safety requirements and long-term use.

The construction, lighting and technical solutions were developed in close dialogue with Färg & Blanche. Through prototypes, analysis and testing, the solution was gradually refined in preparation for production and installation.

The largest Moon Tree stands 5.1 metres tall and weighs 493 kilograms. In total, the installation comprises approximately 570 metres of aluminium profile and more than 1,300 screws.

One of the most complex aspects of the construction was the transition between the trunk and branches. Here, demanding requirements for structural strength and safety had to be combined with the artwork’s organic form.

The integration of the light also required a high degree of precision. Light sources, opal spheres and technical components were adapted to become a natural part of the artwork and create an even, pleasantlight.

In harmony with the surroundings
The proportions and positioning of the sculptures were developed by Färg & Blanche in close relation to the architecture, façades and symmetry of the courtyards. The timber platforms serve both as foundations and seating, creating places to pause and meet alongside the light sculptures.

The park benches were also developed and designed by Färg & Blanche as part of the project.

The result is an artwork in which the artistic vision, the setting and the technical solutions come together as a cohesivewhole.
